A Happy Place – Hadiya Brown

Their Eyes Are Watching God H.B.

10 But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at last your care for me has flourished again; though you surely did care, but you lacked opportunity.

11 Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am,

to be content:

12 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things

I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.

13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Philippians 4

I chose this passage of scripture because I’m not there yet. I am not content. I am not satisfied. I’m just plain old angry because I, like many of you, am fed up with the surfeit of individuals who persist in creating little labels and boxes to put “those people” in. And yes, I’ve done it too. Waking up everyday and feeling the collective hurt of every black man, woman and child who is suffering simply because of the color of their skin is exhausting and can bring out the worst in me. It’s fairly hard to find the strength to abound when even sleep brings you little rest. In response, I will continue to lean on the Lord.

Obviously, he sees something that we do not; something many people simply cannot, nor will they ever be able to see (Mark 4:10-20). As much as I like to tell myself that it is possible, we cannot reach everyone. Many people simply will not change and will be led by base concepts such as hate and ethnocentrism.

But many of us will and have been changed; by our fears for our own lives and the lives of our children. By a deep sense of empathy and compassion for our selves and for those who routinely suffer repeated and justified indignities and atrocities.  But let us not also forget, that underneath whatever actions we respectively take to bring about the change our world so desperately needs, there is love. We, like our Father, are capable of demonstrating vast and incomprehensible amounts of love. By the grace of God, we have been given access to the greatest source of love this world has ever known; a God that sadly many will never know because they would rather stand with whatever and whom ever supports their collective ignorance and foolishness.

I know it’s hard to get through a day, and sometimes even harder to find solace through the night; but we need to hold on to the God we know to be true and faithful. Even when the pain just doesn’t go away. Even when you get angry with God because you don’t understand what he’s doing or can’t see what he sees. We are one, the body of Christ (I Corinthians 12:12-27). We are a community of believers in all that is good and lovely, even when can’t see it in the news and in our Twitter feeds. Reach for it. Keep on nurturing all the joy that God has placed in you.

Be blessed,

8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy-meditate on these things.
